Microsoft: We'll Support Your Downloads After All

Microsoft has now agreed to support compatibility on MSN Music downloads, according to a letter sent to subscribers on Wednesday.  In April, Microsoft indicated that purchased tracks from the now-shuttered MSN Music download store could not be transferred to additional PCs and devices as of August 31, 2008.

The move stirred some negative responses, especially from those burned by restrictive, DRM-free content.  But Microsoft is now shifting its stance, potentially a response to negative publicity.  "After careful consideration, Microsoft has decided to continue to support the authorization of new computers and devices ... through at least the end of 2011," the letter stated.

Microsoft indicated that it would review activity on current downloads before making another decision related to compatibility.  MSN Music  was closed in favor of the newer Zune Marketplace.
