Live Nation: Madonna Selling Quite Well, Thank You

An upcoming, multi-continental Madonna tour has now sold more than one million tickets, according to information shared by Live Nation.  The 'Sticky & Sweet' tour has sold 90 percent of its available seats ahead of a late-August start, and Live Nation pointed to sellouts across a number of major markets.  The list includes Paris, Lisbon, New York, Zurich, Boston, Las Vegas, Mexico City, Vancouver, and several others, according to the company.

Others have been slower-selling, most notably an upcoming gig in Los Angeles in November.  That became the focus of a recent New York Post article, one that questioned the potency of Madonna in the current US-based market.  "At the biggest venues, consumers in the US are not rushing for Madonna tickets with the same fervor that they are in Europe and other parts of the world," the Post asserted, while pointing to "limp response" from Americans.

Whether the US-based response is fundamentally weak remains speculative, though scattered soft-spots are notable.  The current go-round has already been quite lucrative, though Live Nation appears eager to prove the strength of Madonna and its $120 million mega-deal.

But the company also appears to be assuming a more cautious strategy on super-sized relationships.  Internally, aggressive executive Michael Cohl recently exited based on disagreements related to the mega-deal strategy, specifically the pace at which deals should be signed.  Cohl favored a rapid succession of mega-deals, though a more measured approach has reportedly prevailed.
