Woops: Virgin Media Warnings Threaten Disconnection

British ISP Virgin Media is managing some bad publicity following the delivery of a threatening batch of letters.  The access provider recently collaborated with the BPI to deliver a number of letters to its potentially infringing subscribers, though the underlying tone was meant to be educational, not prosecutorial.

Instead, Virgin aggressively threatened disconnections.  On the outside of a batch of several hundred letters, a clear disconnection warning was given.  Backpedaling, the group admitted a "mistake," and promised "absolutely no possibility" of disconnection for file-sharing behavior.

In total, 800 letters were issued, though it remains unclear if Virgin will modify its previous plans to issue additional warnings.  Elsewhere, ISP Carphone Warehouse has flatly refused to send warning letters to its subscribers.
