Most find themselves in a hopeless predicament when it comes to the disaster in the Gulf. Sure, everyone is infuriated by the accident, though most can do little to plug the leak or save a pelican's life.
Musicians are taking a different perspective, though the ultimate impact remains unclear. The response includes some rather questionable boycott calls from groups like Korn, a movement that probably affects local mom-and-pops more than anyone else. But a totally different concept is coming from the organizers behind Give to the Gulf (givetothegulf.org), an idea that encourages artists to upload materials and give the proceeds to cleanup efforts.
This has actually been happening since early June, and involves a charitable contribution from Tunecore. Essentially, artists can easily tap Tunecore to upload relief songs onto iTunes, then chip the funds towards the United Way Gulf Recovery Fund.
So, after Apple takes its cut, the rest that would normally go to the publisher, label, or artist goes towards relief efforts. On a typical $10 album, $7 goes the Gulf effort, for example.
The first album - Give to the Gulf, Volume 1 - was released on June 28th, and artists from "everywhere imaginable" are being encouraged to upload music here. Other contributors include Remarkable Technologies, L&R Productions, JMS Productions, Parkinson Design, Patton Media, and MAD Communications.

okay allow me to be the cynic here. The Korn thing was definitely B.S., and really this is too. The lead anthem blows, and downloads don't really sell. not hating, but def. not appreciating.

Hey You are a pooh pooh head! I can not believe someone is gripping about this? What are you a republican? Work for BP? It's an insane mess and anything will help! Remember the old saying, "It's the thought that counts!" It really is.

Jd, I'm just being a realist. What good are thoughts? We need action that will make a serious difference. Like, huge amounts of money that demonstrably changes lives. Not paid downloads, which offer very little revenue.

It's a bummer Tunecore or the responsible agent couldn't get Apple to relinquish their 30% cut and donate that piece to the relief efforts as well. 100% would certainly sound better and give Apple a nice PR bump in addition to the acts/labels who are taking part. Hopefully they can get enough buy in from decent sized artists to move some downloads.
