The Year After Jackson & Boyle: Is This Another Disaster In Waiting?

So, what happens the year after grand slams from Susan Boyle and Michael Jackson, not to mention Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga?  Of course, three out of those four are still living and all four are still selling - especially Swift and Gaga.  But after a great run from these best-sellers in 2009, the recording industry is looking at a potentially difficult year-over-year comparison.

Majors are still playing a top-heavy game, and the absence of a better baseline is likely to create bigger fluctuations ahead.  During the first half, album sales slipped 11 percent to 154 million units, according to stats shared by Nielsen Soundscan.  But Michael Jackson passed in June of 2009, the start of an aggressive postmortem spike that may have already seen its strongest contribution.

Still, a number of artists could help to fill the upcoming void.  Eminem has already sold a million copies on Recovery, and Lady Antebellum has shifted 2.3 million units of Need You Now.

Perhaps these are all trivial details.  After all, year-2009 album sales were down 12.7 percent to 373.9 million units, and the broader picture is one of ongoing decline.
