Apple shifted more than one million second-generation iPhones over the weekend, according to data confirmed Monday. The tally covers Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, a period marked by long lines and plenty of media coverage. "It took 74 days to sell the first one million original iPhones, so the new iPhone 3G is clearly off to a great start around the world," Steve Jobs declared.
The total comes despite setup glitches and delays, though Apple easily survived the drama. In the end, long lines meant long sales, and overall, Apple successfully orchestrated a global rollout. During the initial iPhone sales weekend last year, Apple sold 270,000 units.
The news produced a mild bump on Wall Street. But it also provided a bump to brands like Pandora, Last.fm, Shazam, AOL Radio, and Virgin Radio. Those products are available within the App Store, part of a growing iPhone software ecosystem. In total, 10 million applications were downloaded during the weekend window.
