Guy Hands is restructuring overhead and perking revenues at EMI
Music. But the brain behind cartoon sensation Gorillaz is striking a
separate label deal, at least temporarily. Blur frontman Damian
Albarn, the brainchild behind Gorillaz, is reportedly shifting to XL
Recordings for the upcoming album, Monkey: Journey To The West, though nothing has been finalized.
The release is based on a circus opera by the same name, created by Albarn in conjunction with Jamie Hewlett and Chen Shi-zheng. According to a recent London Times report, Albarn is free to shop the Monkey side project because he is not performing on the release. But Alborn did score and shape the production, a role that could raise issues of contractual fine print.
