Apple will not be altering it iTunes UK pricing structure after all, thanks to tilting exchange rates. In January, Apple pledged to equalize British a-la-carte price tags with the rest of Europe, following discussions with EU regulators.
But several months later, currency fluctuations have essentially completed the task. "The announcement was that we would match the UK price to that of other lower-priced European countries," an Apple representative recently told the BBC. "This is no longer necessary as exchange rates have effectively done it for us."
Currently, British music fans pay 79 pence per download, a sticker that was once more expensive than mainland tags of 99 euro cents. At present, 79 pence translates into 99.38 euro cents. The iTunes Store has been scrutinized by European regulators for its lack of pricing parity, a violation of European Union statutes.
