50 Cent is now suing Taco Bell over a questionable use of his image, according to papers filed in Manhattan federal court on Wednesday. The taco chain incorporated the rapper into a campaign designed to draw attention to its sub-$1 menu. The "79-89-99 Why Pay More Value Menu" includes Cinnamon Twists (79 cents), Crunchy Tacos (89 cents), and Bean Burritos (99 cents).
As part of a guerilla marketing campaign, Taco Bell issued an open letter to numerous media outlets. The letter requests that the rapper change his name for a day - from 50 Cent to something like 79 Cent - and place an order at a Taco Bell location. "We know that you adopted the name 50 Cent years ago as a metaphor for change," the ad stated. "We at Taco Bell are also huge advocates for change. We encourage you to 'Think Outside the Bun' and hope you accept our offer."
The rapper, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, alleges that Taco Bell is essentially faking an endorsement deal - without paying more. "Without seeking or obtaining Jackson's authorization, defendant Taco Bell made him the star and focus of its nationwide advertising campaign by using his name, persona and trademark to promote Taco Bell's business and products," the filing stated.
Jackson is seeking $4 million in damages. Taco Bell is controlled by Yum Brands.
