Visual producers have lots of options for inexpensively matching music to action. But Slicethepie is seeing an opportunity helping copyright owners better understand their own catalogs. The fan-funded startup is now stretching its model into smart catalog search, a concept that allows companies to better mine their catalogs.
According to Slicethepie, discussions are underway with a few major catalog owners across the US and the UK. The idea has been named SoundOut Search, and descriptive, semantic searches are encouraged. "Music search is a notoriously tough nut to crack with existing catalog navigation typically resembling an iTunes experience - largely based around keywords and metadata," explained Slicethepie CEO David Courtier-Dutton. "SoundOut Search is closer to a Google experience and represents a major leap forward in semantic search for music."
This is still quite early, and the action is currently happening on a relatively modest catalog of 5,000 songs from unsigned artists. Those songs have collectively garnered about 500,000 reviews from Slicethepie members. In the initial run, results can be a bit spotty at times, though in many cases, the matches are good - and potentially usable in a production situation. More at soundoutsearch.com, look for a more formal company announcement on Tuesday.
