In January of 2008, VentureBeat compiled a list of 38 'free/cheap music sites,' all of whom were making noise at the time. Many are still with us, though the death toll is staggering. Take a look...

paul, please could you link the icons (or logos or whatever you call the pix) to their official websites (if they still exist)?

I think we can tackle this later today. Only problem is that many of these are dead, so we'll skip linking those.

It's possible that social network sites like Myspace could benefit from the possible decrease in Facebook market share and influence as a result of the new Google+. In other words, decreased brand value due to decreased dominance could help the smaller players for a more even playing field.

Most of these are either dead or are clearly not the saviors of the music business.
The question is ... did these apps fail, or did the ecosystem fail them?

Although you say ReverbNation is awesome, they offer a streaming readio and they do NOT pay royalties to artists. If we're going to win the battle in the onslaught against copyright and the right of artists to have some remuneration for their work, we need to start putting massive pressure on these sites to pay their fair share. If they won't, we need to withdraw our music. I understand ReverbNation has a lot of awesome tools, but they take a cut for everything (and not a small one).
I wonder how many other sites you've listed above will not pay artist royalties for streaming?

Yes if they are going to USE music then they need to figure out how to pay for it. Till then there will be many more music sites that we will forget.
