Japanese Government: Beware of Exploding iPods

The iPod frequently draws praise, both for its svelte fashion and reliable function.  But despite endless gushing amongst journalists and devout consumers, the iPod is less-then-perfect, and sometimes fatally flawed.

The iPod has faced its share of battery issues in the past.  But scattered reports worldwide have exposed the corpses of rare, melted iPod nanos.   Stateside, a late-2007 report on CNN documented a flaming nano in Atlanta, and the issue has also flared up in Japan.

Just recently, the Japanese Ministry of the Economy, Trade and Industry pointed to three instances of flaming iPod nanos, and urged consumers to exercise caution.  The agency first started investigating the issue in March of this year, and pinpointed lithium-ion batteries within earlier-model devices.
