MySpace Music got a needed visit from the plastic surgeon this week, and a number of marquee artists are trotting out streamlined profile pages. But with progress comes an uncomfortable test of just how active and engaged MySpace Music bands actually are.
Will the millions of other bands update?
The fresh templates replace some of the notoriously chaotic aspects of a typical MySpace Music page. Actually, this is part of a broader MySpace overhaul, one characterized by once-foreign identifiers like "clean," "easy-to-use navigation," and "consistent themes."
Indeed, the wilds or yore went out of style years ago, and an unkempt interface probably contributed to MySpace's fall from grace. But despite the topline traffic erosion, MySpace Music is still a player on the music stage. Now, the question is just how strong that position actually is. Here are just some of the improvements:
o Bands can upload up to 25 songs.
o Choice of dozens of different page themes.
o Ability to create a customized marquee header.
o Profile changes affect photo, video, and all other pages.
...and, some of the bands embracing these changes during the current, beta window:
o Lady Antebellum
o Outkast
o The Decemberists
o Silversun Pickups
o Imogen Heap
The upgrade process starts here.

mmm. tough call, considering it'll be some work to really retrofit. depends on how important the site is to the band really - maybe it's more important to focus on other properties. depends.

MySpace unveils cleaner templates. But, will anyone care?

New MySpace profiles - did you know about this. I still believe a MySpace page is a must for a band. Update yours.

There's an interesting post by Constantine Roussos of .music in the earlier story on whether artists need websites. But I think that MySpace is just as important. You should be updating your page now.

I luv that "Free Hair Removal" ad on The Decemberists page... I think therein lies the problem with the asthetic of Myspace pages. What happens when a band's page has visual ads above the fold that don't sync up with their target audience? A cheesy ad can kill the entire zen of a band page (IMO).
I would like to see a heatmap of a top Myspace band page for a glimpse of what areas visitors really interact with... I bet it's not the ad box. We did one on my site's homepage and the music player got the most hits, followed by the "Start Here" navigation column. (www.pmpworldwide.com) I understand the importance of ads in the Myspace model so I don't think there's too much they can do about it tho. (At least they're making an effort)

For people saying a Myspace page is a must, what exactly do you see as the advantage over a well-designed homepage?

There are more eyeballs on Twitter, Facebook, our personal page and even on Soundcloud & Youtube to dedicate time to a new, but still poorly designed Myspace. We still have a myspace page, which I recently stripped of all design and refreshed the playlist. Now it's there, as a google marker in case you need a quick idea of what we sound like as a label. Beyond that, Myspace will have to do more then this to get me to invest my time. Time IS money. Never forget that, invest your time well online or fail.
