Does Facebook owe Apple access to Ping? Or is the notoriously closed Apple merely tasting its own medicine? Either way, this is a nice moment for the majors, a group collectively manhandled by Apple demands for years.
The rift came to light Thursday morning after early adopters could not connect with iTunes-connected Facebook friends, a natural expectation for the Ping platform. At the Ping unveiling in San Francisco, Jobs told journalists that "onerous terms" were preventing a connection, but users appear to be getting caught into an API access battle. Apple may be attempting direct access, while Facebook appears to be blocking those attempts.
Perhaps the parties can agree on "less onerous" terms, though getting Godzilla and King Kong to compromise might be difficult. "Facebook and Apple have cooperated successfully in the past to offer people great social experiences and we look forward to doing so in the future," Facebook floated.
And who else is laughing? Palm, or at least those still capable of laughing. More ahead...
