MTV Networks enjoyed a nice ratings bump on Sunday night's Video Music Awards (VMAs), spurred partly by the now-infamous Kanye outburst. According to information supplied by MTV, the show garnered a crowd of 26.9 million, up 17 percent from 23 million last year. That measures the number of people that watched the show at some point - across MTV, MTV2, and VH1 - a total that can fluctuate in reaction to real-time occurrences like the Kanye interruption.
Another, more even-keeled metric also showed a gain. The average number of viewers landed at 8.97 million, up 6.8 percent from 8.43 million in 2008. That was boosted by VH1 and MTV2, which collectively contributed more than 2 million. Overall, the average viewer base was the best since 2004, and among the under-35 set, MTV Networks scored its best showing since 2005.
Sounds good, though more reaction happened outside of traditional television, especially for the showcased - or self-showcasing - artists. 'Stay tuned' for more post-VMA data.
