YouTube recently updated its suite of content identification tools, a nice development for labels and other rights holders.  But these gains are iterative, and recognition technology will continue to improve over time.  Over the weekend, Audible Magic - a YouTube partner - alerted Digital Music News to the filing of four new identification patents.

The patents (US 7,500,007; 7,529,659; 7,562,012 and 7,565,327) include the ability to identify content across different situations and environments, including media players, automated e-commerce applications, targeted advertising, and portable devices.  "As a team, we are committed to providing cutting-edge, innovative solutions designed to identify digital media - regardless of whether unauthorized transmissions take place on a user's personal computer or some other device such as a game player or smartphone," said Audible founder and CEO Vance Ikezoye.  The approvals were first tipped Monday morning.
