MTV Does Its Own Hulu Dance... Is Universal Music Next?

MTV Networks has now unleashed a Hulu-like destination for music videos, a move that comes alongside chatter of a similar move by Universal Music Group.  The MTV Music site, at mtvmusic.com, also features interviews, performances, and other music-related footage.  The destination currently prioritizes a large number of vintage videos, including "Welcome to the Jungle," "Money for Nothing," and "Sledgehammer," though newer songs are also part of the action.

MTV placed videos front-and-center in the 80s, though interactivity was mostly absent from the media experience.  Updated for 2008, mtvmusic.com allows users to place videos into social networking destinations, and also offers standard interactivity features like commenting and rating.  That is part of an effort to gain ground against YouTube, though MTV will experience difficulty drawing users away.   Separately, Universal Music Group chief Doug Morris recently hinted at a similar, video-focused destination, though plans appear formative.
