RIAA Faces Resistance In Oregon, Privacy Concerns Arise

The RIAA is now facing resistance from the University of Oregon over various student subpoenas.  The major label group has been hammering universities with notices this year, though a number of schools have resisted those efforts.  In the latest pushback, administrators at the University of Oregon have opted not to match student names with various IP addresses, citing privacy concerns.  The RIAA typically sends pre-litigation notices to students, though schools are required to clarify student names in the process.

The situation has now attracted Oregon attorney general Hardy Myers, who joined the university in seeking to nullify the RIAA requests.  Myers and the university are asking a federal judge to quash the subpoenas, a move that could have ramifications for other college responses.  The latest development comes alongside a precipitous drop in CD sales, and continued gains in file-sharing activity.  The RIAA first started issuing lawsuits against individuals in September of 2003.
