The Performance Rights Talk? Don't Forget the Buzzwords...

The Performance Rights Act has made it out of committee, though Representative John Conyers (D-MI) and Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) have asked both sides to 'talk it out' before a broader vote in either chamber.  Sounds reasonable, though a neat-and-clean resolution seems a bit far-fetched at this point.

And, ahead of the negotiations, sponsors of a contrary bill - the Local Radio Freedom Act - have asked to sit at the table.  The Freedom Act has gained heavy support in both the House and Senate, and reliable buzz-terms like 'local radio,' 'economic climate,' and 'tax' are getting solid airplay.  "We have serious concerns that legislation imposing a new royalty on local radio stations, particularly in this economic climate, will be tremendously harmful to radio stations and their employees, local communities that rely on radio, and recipients, such as charities and non-profits, that receive free airtime for their causes," wrote Representatives Gene Green (D-TX) and Mike Conaway (R-TX) in an open letter to Conyers.  Green and Conaway are lead sponsors of the Freedom Act.
