The band relationship is sometimes compared to a marriage, and parallels certainly exist. But instead of a complicated relationship between two individuals, a band introduces more players, more conflicts, more outside pressures, and endless creative tug-strings into the equation. And, judging by the number of bands whose members simply hate one another, these conflicts are usually destructive.
Or, at least very, very complicated. Perhaps Aerosmith typifies the ups-and-downs that a successful group endures, though its near four-decade run is almost unheard of. But instead of mellowing the drama with age, Aerosmith is still showing signs of dysfunction.
After a show in Abu Dhabi, UAE, Steven Tyler appeared to be quitting the band. In fact, Joe Perry publicly stated that the search was on for a new singer. That followed a summer of injuries and canceled dates.
But just days later, Tyler reappeared in grand fashion. At a recent gig by the Joe Perry Project, Tyler unexpectedly danced onto the stage and proclaimed his loyalty to the group. "I just want New York to know, I am not leaving Aerosmith," Tyler told the crowd at Irving Plaza. Perhaps betraying a publicity stunt, Tyler and the Perry Project played "Walk This Way," walking in harmony together... at least for the moment.
