  • Shazam has attracted 50 million users since launch, according to figures supplied by the company Wednesday.  Shazam has also scored a funding round involving Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers (Google, Amazon) as well as previous backers Acacia Capital and DN Capital.  
  • Venture capital investments bumped 17.5 percent to $7.7 billion during the recent quarter, according to a tally supplied by TechCrunch.  Additionally, the figures reveal that M&A activity is gaining sharply. 
  • Departing Orchard CEO Greg Scholl will soon oversee local media platforms at NBC Universal, reporting into Local Media president John Wallace.  The new gig starts November 2nd.
  • Twitter is taking fresh steps to crack down on spam accounts.  Users can flag suspicious followers, and Twitter staff will check the suspect accounts.  
  • Wikia (founded by Wikipedia's Jimmy Wales) has now acquired LyricWiki, a licensed collection of song lyrics.  "LyricWiki's song catalog may be the most comprehensive in the industry," said Gil Penchina, CEO of Wikia.  The deal involves royalty payouts through Gracenote, according to the companies.
