Chinese Democracy Comes to MySpace Music...

Chinese Democracy is now available as a free stream on MySpace Music, ahead of a Best Buy in-store slated for this weekend.  The preview is the first authorized placement of the Guns N' Roses album, a long-awaited project.  The on-demand preview includes a bold and prominent pre-order link to Best Buy, a strategic momentum builder for the mega-retailer.  The MySpace Music exclusive started early Thursday morning, and follows a string of pre-release leaks, most ostensibly from fan Kevin Cogill.

Predictably, the MySpace preview does not include downloads, though bestbuy.com will eventually offer paid download options.  Meanwhile, Best Buy is ramping awareness ahead of the in-store, and readying major floorspace and strong positioning.  The ramp-up activities include a pre-release listening party at the Roxy on the Sunset Strip.

Now, the question is whether Guns can rally first-week figures on par with AC/DC.  The recent AC/DC release, Black Ice, sold more than 780,000 first-week units, powered largely by a Wal-Mart exclusive.  Best Buy just issued warnings related to upcoming sales, based on decreased consumer spending and foot traffic.
