eMusic Crosses Quarter-Billion Download Mark...

Independent online retailer eMusic has now sold 250 million downloads, according to figures shared Wednesday.  The company started counting in late 2003, following the introduction of a new, subscription-based download model.  That approach bundles a fixed allotment of MP3s within a monthly, pre-paid download tier, a structure that naturally boosts the paid download tally.

The company now has stores in the United States, Canada, and 26 European countries.  That broadened footprint, alongside a growing shift towards digital formats, is helping eMusic accelerate the download pace.  According to the company, the most recent 100 million downloads happened in 453 days, while the first 100 million required 1,122 days.

The eMusic bundled plan differs markedly from the iTunes Store, which sells downloads as one-off, a-la-carte purchases.  Just recently, Apple pointed to a paid download tally of more than five billion, starting from the introduction of the iTunes Music Store in May of 2003.  In marketing collateral, eMusic frequently hoists itself as second place to iTunes, though the difference between first and second is extreme.  Moreover, eMusic caters to a niche, independent audience, instead of the broader, often mainstream crowd that surrounds iTunes.
