So, does the future of Rhapsody now hang in the balance? Joint venture partners RealNetworks and MTV Networks are actively reconsidering their ownership stakes, according to recent regulatory filings, though the next steps remain unclear. And, according to information from the companies, talks appear early stage.
Stirring speculation is a discouraging backdrop - instead of ramping subscriber numbers upward, Rhapsody has been shedding consumers and losing ground to the various shades of free (P2P, BitTorrent, ad-supported on-demand). That could be the motivation for inviting another investor, or divesting the property entirely.
On Friday, both companies addressed the filing, though few specifics emerged. "Talks are very early, so it's a bit premature to try to pin down what might happen," RealNetworks executive Ryan Luckin relayed. MTV Networks offered to research the matter and discuss at a later point.
