The world waited nearly fifteen years for Chinese Democracy. But somehow, the pent-up energy is not translating into bankable receipts. Ahead of official sales numbers from exclusive retail partner Best Buy, sources close to the album are pointing to a rather subdued release, despite the hype.
According to one source, first-week figures on the Guns N' Roses opus were "nowhere near Black Ice," the AC/DC album that recently scored 784,000 during its debut week in the United States. Another noted that Democracy is "well below gold, maybe gold at best," based on a number of issues.
That includes softer traffic at Best Buy, thanks to more selective purchasing of higher-end, consumer electronics items. Just recently, Best Buy dialed down its financial guidance, based on the traffic and consumer confidence issues. That is not a problem shared by the deeply discounted and more diversified Wal-Mart, the exclusive partner for AC/DC. Meanwhile, another source noted that Best Buy offered less aggressive in-store positioning than Wal-Mart, though the album still enjoyed considerable visibility both inside and outside of the retailer.
Across the pond, Chinese Democracy has been trumped on the British charts by Day & Age, the latest release from the Killers.
