Another ISP-bundled music download offering has surfaced in Europe. The latest comes from DNA, an ISP in Finland now bundling unlimited downloads within a larger broadband package. The fixed-line offering, dubbed DNA Music Broadband, also includes a range of lower-tier services.
According to information supplied by the ISP, the offering currently includes Universal Music Group content. The catalog is set to expand, and the service is covered by a monthly fee of 39.90 euros ($50.71 at current exchange rates). "We want to be the first to deliver new and affordable services that benefit consumers," explained Mikko Haapala, digital manager at Universal Music Finland.
But just like the recently-launched Play, a bundled music offering by TDC in Denmark, tracks are DRM-protected. Specifically, files on DNA are encoded as protected WMAs (DRM 10), a structure that cramps portability. CD-burning is disallowed, and iPod or iPhone compatibility is nonexistent.
That sort of protection has proven
poisonous for a number of services, though TDC has gained considerable
traction on Play. According to TDC backend provider 24/7
Entertainment, 60 million tracks were downloaded on Play as of
mid-October, based on a subscriber total of roughly 2.5 million.
