Pandora Getting Its Dashboard Integration On...

Pandora was an early-mover on the iPhone App Store, a shrewd decision that changed the trajectory for the company.  But what about the all-important automobile, a place where captive audiences devour massive amounts of music and all things mobile?  Well, Pandora is now starting to address that market more seriously, and the first fruits will appear early next year.

According to Pandora CTO Tom Conrad, Pandora is getting ready to announce a serious dashboard partnership in January.  "The first implementation to market will be the tethered phone," Conrad explained during a discussion at the SanFran MusicTech Summit on Tuesday.  That means "connect to the dash, and the controls are in the dash," with Bluetooth the conduit of choice.

So, the iPhone (or whatever smartphone) is still the source of the experience, but certain controls are assumed by the car.  But aspects like the mobile connection and billing relationship stay with the handheld operator.

That will formalize an ad-hoc experience for many fans.  Already, listeners are rigging their iPhones into their dashboards, though a more sophisticated, integrated approach is a superior - and far safer - alternative.  Conrad referred to the current state of things as the 'fumbling around stage,' something 'no one is excited about from a safety standpoint."

So when to expect the first rollouts?  Conrad pointed to an announcement ahead of CES, happening early January in Las Vegas.
