Coldplay Officially Responds to Plagiarism Suit...

Coldplay officially addressed charges that its recent track, "Viva la Vida," was stolen from guitarist Joe Satriani.  "If there are any similarities between our two pieces of music, they are entirely coincidental, and just as surprising to us as to him," the band stated on its website.  "Joe Satriani is a great musician, but he did not write or have any influence on the song 'Viva la Vida'. We respectfully ask him to accept our assurances of this and wish him well with all future endeavors."

Earlier, Satriani filed suit in Los Angeles, alleging that Coldplay lifted a melody from his instrumental song, "If I Could Fly".  During a recent interview, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin also rebuffed the claims.  But a recent overlay of the two tracks on YouTube reveals an uncanny resemblance, and Coldplay could face a difficult battle in court.
