Sales jumped 15 percent year-over-year on Cyber Monday, according to data shared Wednesday by comScore. The bump was caused by serious discounts and incentives, including free shipping offers. In total, online sales on the day totaled $846 million, according to the research firm.
In terms of topline sales, the lures were successful, though margins are getting shaved in this climate - across online and physical outlets. "We can but hope that their aggressive discounting has still left room for profits," said comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni. Broader internet traffic improved 10 percent, according to Nielsen Online.
Just recently, Black Friday receipts showed a mild improvement, also stirred by heavy discounting. The better-than-expected gains were mostly likely not shared by brick-and-mortar music retailers, a group struggling against intensifying CD sales declines. Meanwhile, the impact on paid downloads and other digital music services remains unclear, though broader recording industry figures are expected to nosedive in November.
