The United States government is using blaring music to extract sensitive information from enemy combatants, according to information from prisoner rights group Reprieve. The torturous playlist includes songs from artists spanning AC/DC, Eminem, Dr. Dre, Nine Inch Nails, David Gray, Metallica, Drowning Pool, and even songs from Barney and Sesame Street. The songs are allegedly played repeatedly and at ear-splitting volumes, a technique designed to crack detainees.
The technique is not approved by the United Nations and European Court of Human Rights, according to Reprieve, though the US does not ban the practice. Many of the musicians were unhappy about the use of their content for torture. "What we're talking about here is people in a darkened room, physically inhibited by handcuffs, bags over their heads and music blaring at them," said David Gray. "That is nothing but torture."
Trent Reznor offered a similar opinion, though Metallica lead James Hetfield, Drowning Pool bassist Steve Benton, Deicide drummer Steve Asheim, and Barney writer Bob Singleton seemed less concerned.
