The 'mini-mag' concept is starting to gain some traction, and
Walmart is the latest to offer a boost. The ginormous retailer is
backing a 'shrunken' effort from Alternative Press - essentially a
year-end digest that combines editorial, CDs, and goodies like posters,
bracelets, and contests. The 52-page '2009 Review / 2010 Preview
Edition' hits Walmart shelves this week.
This is nothing like the traditional AP; rather, it is a reduced-sized digest designed to satisfy the multimedia consumption habits of today. Also on board is RED, the independent distribution arm of Sony Music Entertainment.
The price tag is also $5, a cut-cost approach that could define the series. "We're so excited to be a part of these mini music magazines with RED," relayed Mike Shea, president and founder of Alternative Press. "In these difficult financial times during the peak holiday season, they are an innovative way to get a lot of new music into fans' hands at an affordable price."
This is the second mini-mag toss by AP, and the year-end edition closely follows a similar play involving Spin, Best Buy and Napster. That mini-mag, called 'Find 'Em First,' hit shelves in November with a considerable digital component.
