Danger Mouse + Sparklehorse: The Art of Releasing a Blank CD

Could you get away with releasing a blank CD-R?

Or, more importantly, would you ever try such a stunt?  For the duo of Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse, label EMI Music has prevented the release of music, based on a legal dispute.  The problem was first tipped by blog Tripwire, though the exact details remain unclear.

So, instead of inviting legal barbs, the duo has decided to simply release a blank disc – and let their fans figure out the rest.  “For legal reasons, enclosed CD-R contains no music,” the package reportedly explains.  “Use it as you will.”  The album is titled Dark Night of the Soul.

And, you guessed it, the music is readily available online, and ready for burning.  Actually, the entire album started leaking on the 7th, following a preview stream offered by Chrysalis.  But fans will not be downloading a 100-page illustrative booklet of photos by David Lynch, a visual component of the physical release.
