Out of Court, Out of Mind: Apple, Eminem Publisher Settle

  • Save

Apple has now settled a publishing dispute with Eight Mile Style, LLC, though terms remain confidential.

Eight Mile carries to rights to a considerable number of Eminem tracks, and the company claimed that Apple was using its works without proper authorization.

Initially, the rights were arranged through label Aftermath, a typical pass-through, though Eight Mile protested the structure and demanded millions.  The group also requested a separate contract and a direct payment structure.  Martin Affiliated was also a plaintiff, and a total of 93 songs were disputed.

So, why the confusion?  Welcome to the music industry, a place where splits, ownership stakes, and deal structures are confusing, to say the least.  Indeed, this is not the first case of its kind, and companies like Apple can probably expect a dribble of similar lawsuits over time.
