The top 10 most-googled people of the year were all pop stars, minus Kim Kardashian…who’s just engaged to a pop star.

The above graph shows interest over time for the top five artists in the list. The giant blue peak represents Google searches surrounding Miley Cyrus’ VMA performance.

1. Miley Cyrus

2. Drake

3. Justin Bieber

4. Beyoncé

5. Rihanna

6. Taylor Swift

7. Selena Gomez

8. Katy Perry

9. Kanye West

Google’s global search results only ranks trending topics, but ‘most-searched overall’ results are available by country. Therefore, these results come from the top searches in the United States.

The list is a sad commentary on the music biz and society, in general.

Why? Because shitty “wholesome” indie music isn’t in the top lists? How about you grow a pair.

Or because more than half the list is mediocre at best hacks.

Actually, because a cheap publicity stunt like Miley’s VMA performance garnered so much more interest that nothing else can be said to matter – and it’s not like that had anything to do with music, as such. I don’t mind sexualised performances, but we’d gone through this whole “sexual revolution” bit half a century ago, Shirley?
