Music blog aggregator Hype Machine has left SpinMedia, moving to TownSquare Media.

TownSquare is a media and entertainment group. They own 312 radio stations, 500 events, and a variety of websites — such as Consequence of Sound, Paste Magazine, and Potholes in My Blog. They also recently acquired Just Jared and Just Jared Jr. from SpinMedia.

Anthony Volodkin, one of Hype Machine‘s founders, said

“We are excited to team up with Townsquare Media to better connect listeners, marketers and music, and look forward to working with a partner focused on making a significant impact in this space”

Perhaps SpinMedia’s impact wasn’t enough for Hype Machine.  SpinMedia Group recently acquired SpinMedia LLC, which let the company shift its debts around.  SpinMedia said that they are now focusing on high-growth sites such as The Frisky, Stereogum, Idolator, Spin, and Celebuzz… Not a good thing to hear if you’re one of SpinMedia’s other brands.

Your story is a bit wrong. TownSquare doesn’t “own” any of those sites. They are an exclusive advertising representative for those sites. They will handle all of the remnant fill display ads, premium fill, and sponsorships. For that they’ll take close to a 50% cut on premium and a 30% cut on remnant inventory.

Adam is correct, but might I add that Town Square Media does not do exclusive advertising for all for these sites either and instead handles only a portion of advertising for these independent companies.
