Finally: ASCAP, BMI, and SOCAN Introduce a Collaborative Registration Process…

Performance rights organizations ASCAP, BMI, and SOCAN have teamed up on an initiative that will streamline registration for publishers.

Publishers will be able to submit their registrations to all three PROs through MusicMark.  This is especially helpful if a work is co-written by members of these different societies.  Theoretically, you’ll only have to submit the registration once.

Once registration goes through MusicMark, it will then reach its respective PRO.  The system will then function as it usually does, as MusicMark is only a submission portal.

Of course, MusicMark doesn’t address every other PRO, of which there are dozens worldwide.  And, notably absent from this picture is SESAC, the sometimes-rogue third PRO in the United States that often plays by its own rules.   Which means the extreme headache of PRO licensing will continue, with MusicMark an aspirin thrown in.

Here’s a list of FAQs regarding MusicMark.
