Conor Oberst Rape Accuser Says the Whole Thing Was a Lie…

  • Save

At the beginning of the year, an anonymous xoJane commenter accused Conor Oberst of raping her 10 years ago. The comment then made its way to Tumblr, where it went viral.

Conor’s team released a statement, saying the comment was “unequivocally false”. A month later Conor sued the commenter (Joan Harris) for libel.

Now, the entire issue can be put to rest. After months of no response, Joan Harris has released a public apology, saying that she made the whole thing up:

“The statements I made and repeated online and elsewhere over the past six months accusing Conor Oberst of raping me are 100% false. I made up those lies about him to get attention while I was going through a difficult period in my life and trying to cope with my son’s illness. I publicly retract my statements about Conor Oberst, and sincerely apologize to him, his family, and his fans for writing such awful things about him. I realize that my actions were wrong and could undermine the claims of actual sexual assault victims and for that I also apologize. I’m truly sorry for all the pain that I caused.”

I hope Oberst sues and makes an example of her. Such a horrible thing to make up. Legitimate sexual assault victims are already doubted when they bravely come forward. This doesn’t help. Women (and girls) need to learn that falsely crying rape is totally unacceptable and comes with consequences.

Not to mention this woman nearly ruined Oberst’s career and his life.

Sadly, this is kind of like spilling red wine on white pants; the stain will never really go away. I think people will always doubt the apology, even though it’s right there in writing.

I think most people feel raped by his music.
