4DSOUND Brings an Immersive Experience to Live Shows…

  • Save

4DSound is a new sound system developed by Paul Oomen (read Oomen’s Introduction to Psychoacoustics for Red Bull Music Academy). Forty eight speakers are arranged in a grid throughout the room, surrounding the audience.

The setup is controlled by Ableton Live 9 and Max for Live and Ableton recently put together a video on 4DSound:

4DSound will be at Amsterdam Dance Event from October 15th through 19th, there will be performances, talks, and hack sessions. Artists include Vladislav Delay, Stimming, and Max Cooper – who recently put on the best live show I’ve ever seen. The full 4DSound ADE program can be found here.

Great to see spatial audio coming up more and more. 4D Sound is very interesting but I personally see a much greater likelihood of Ambisonics becoming a de facto standard given that it is now open source and has a large and growing community behind it. Pair either of those with the newly emerging field of wearable tactile bass solutions that companies like SubPac are ushering in and we have the beginnings of a whole new paradigm for live music experiences.
