Performers and fans alike can — and do — grouse about some of the awards given away in the entertainment industry. But as the sole peer-recognized award in the music industry, the Grammys still command high respect.
The Recording Academy has now released a list of the key dates for the upcoming 61st Grammy Awards, along with some key information about voting and entry processes. They have also included a few changes to the rules.
Important dates to remember:
- The product eligibility period runs from Oct. 1, 2017 through Sept. 30, 2018.
- The access period for the online entry process is from July 2, 2018 through July 16, 2018 (i.e., we’re in the middle of it)
- The deadline to become a member of the Recording Academy in order to use the online entry process is July 31, 2018.
- The access period for online entry for the final round is Aug. 8, 2018 through Aug. 22, 2018
(According to a Grammy source to DMN, the ‘final round’ is designed to accommodate releases later in the eligibility window. In effect, the two periods are pretty much the same thing; though labels and artists with upcoming, late-September releases should submit during the second wave, while already-released music should be submitted in the first eligibility period.)
- The deadline to become a member in order to vote in the first round is Sept. 15, 2018.
- First-round voting runs from Oct. 17, 2018 through Oct. 31, 2018.
- The nominations announcement has not yet been determined.
- Final-round voting runs from Dec. 13, 2018 through Jan. 9, 2019.
- Final-round voting runs from Dec. 13, 2018 through Jan. 9, 2019.
- The date of the 61st Grammys telecast has not yet been determined.
Important Changes
For the first time in its history, the Academy has expanded nominations for album, record, and song of the year from five to eight. The number of nominations allowed in all other categories remains unchanged at five. Music supervisors are now eligible for the Best Compilation Soundtrack Album award, but they will only be eligible as producers if they produced more than half of the soundtrack. Additionally, a review committee will now choose the nominations in the World Music categories.
One change the trustees did not make is sure to surprise some in the industry. There had been some predictions that last year’s male-dominated awards results would lead the Academy to bring back the old gender-specific categories.
