John Lennon’s ‘Imagine’ is easily one of the most powerful songs of a generation.
Universal Music Group is releasing a new, 140-track boxed set of ‘Imagine’ to mark the 78th birthday of John Lennon. The six-disc set will debut on October 5th, just four days before the legendary Beatle’s birthday.
Imagine — The Ultimate Collection was announced today and fully authorized by Yoko Ono Lennon, who worked as a creative director on the release and oversaw production. The set contains two Blu-ray discs and four CDs to provide a variety of content to Beatles and Lennon fans.
Raw studio mixes are included to give listeners a peek inside some of Lennon’s original performances. 5.1 surround sound mixes are included alongside a Quadrasonic album mix, which is the first album to feature a Quadrasonic remaster in more than 50 years.
The quadrasonic sound mix is a four-speaker format that was briefly popular among audiophiles in the 1970s.
The Imagine set also includes uncirculated demos, rare outtakes, and isolated track elements that have never been released before. “The Evolution Documentary” is also included and features a track-by-track audio montage that details songs through several stages of production including rehearsals, studio chatter, recordings, and more.
The digital version of the Ultimate Collection will include all audio from the four CDs. Other configurations for the release of Imagine include a 2CD Deluxe Edition, 1 CD remaster, and 2LP 180-gram black vinyl edition.
Alongside the announcement of the Ultimate Collection, an original home recording of Lennon playing the piano and singing his most famous song was released for everyone to enjoy.
The recording was remastered and released after being discovered in a box of original tapes in the Lennon archives among tapes with unclear labeling.
The set is for sale online at imaginejohnyoko.com.
