Drake is facing serious backlash over a 2010 concert clip — though it’s unclear if any legal repercussions will result.
Footage of a Drake concert in 2010 has now surfaced, with accusations of assault against an underage girl resulting. In the clip, Drake (real name Aubrey Drake Graham) is shown groping and kissing a 17-year old fan repeatedly, while confirming her age to the audience.
In the on-stage display, Drake is shown groping, kissing and caressing the fan’s breasts before asking her age. “Y’all gon’ have me get carried away. I get in trouble for shit like this. How old are you?”
The answer comes back as 17, though that didn’t stop the rapper from continuing (much to the crowd’s delight).
“I can’t go to jail yet, man,” the rapper says. “Why do you look like that? You thick. Look at all this. Well, listen 17, I had fun. I don’t know whether I should feel guilty or not, but I had fun. I like the way your breasts feel against my chest. I just want to thank you.”
Drake was 24 at the time of the performance, which took place in Denver, Colorado.
That could make all the difference, given that Colorado’s age of consent is 17. In the U.S., the age of consent is a state-by-stage statute, ranging from 16-18.
Regardless of the legal technicalities, plenty of fans are upset with the clip and its apparent lack of consent.
“He should ask before touching someone first of all,” YouTube commenter Shelby A remarked. “Just because you’re Drake doesn’t mean you can do whatever you want. Secondly, he would have been okay if after he found out her age he apologized to her. Not go on and say he had fun and liked the way her breasts felt.”
The clip has been viewed millions of times over the the past 48 hours. But digging deeper, it was originally uploaded to YouTube on May 18th, 2010 by someone in the crowd. It may have been largely ignored at the time, though currently, the video has 1.32 million views and heavy activity.
