
HBO Max revealed on WarnerMedia Day 3 the female-helmed TV comedy projects it is developing, which includes Rap Shit from Issa Rae.
Rap Shit, which is the working title of the show, will be a half-hour series that will seek to continue the success Rae is having with Insecure and A Black Lady Sketch Show. The series will follow an all-female hip-hop group who are living in the Miami area and trying to make it.
Rae will not only write the series pilot but will also be one of the executive producers. Others include Montrel McKay from Issa Rae Productions and both Jonathan Berry and Dave Becky from 3 Arts Entertainment.
Other projects HBO Max is developing include DC Super Hero High from Elizabeth Banks and College Girls from Mindy Kaling, who will also write the series and act as the showrunner.
Sarah Aubrey, who is the head of original content at HBO Max, issued a statement in conjunction with the news. She said, “Elizabeth Banks, Issa Rae and Mindy Kaling are three of the most gifted women in our industry, and are now bringing their impressive, original projects to HBO Max.”
Kevin Reilly, who is the chief content officer at HBO Max and the president of TBS, TNT, and truT, added, “These three incredible talents embody the distinct and diverse voices that will give flight to the quality HBO Max brand promise across all audiences.”
Issa Rae rose to fame through her work on a YouTube series called Awkward Black Girl. She not only stars in Insecure but also created it and co-wrote it. For her work on the show, she has garnered two Golden Globe Award nominations for Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy as well as a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.
Rae is also scheduled to star and produce in a remake of Set It Off.
