Gabrielle Union Files Formal Complaint Against America’s Got Talent — NBC Responds

Actress Gabrielle Union has filed a formal complaint against NBC and the producers of America’s Got Talent.

Gabrielle Union submitted the allegations of wrongdoing to the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing. In a recent Variety interview, the 47-year-old described once again the uncomfortable nature of her brief tenure on America’s Got Talent.

Specifically, Union alleged that the smoking habits of AGT judge Simon Cowell caused her to have frequent allergic reactions (which made her nose run, to the dismay of judge and OCD sufferer Howie Mandel), besides noting perceived instances of on-set racial insensitivity, among other claims. Accordingly, the Department of Fair Employment and Housing complaint – which may be a precursor to a lawsuit – centers exclusively on Union’s experiences while working on and filming AGT.

But at the time of this writing, a full copy of the complaint hadn’t been made publicly available, nor had Union taken to social media to address the matter. However, Union’s husband, NBA star Dwayne Wade, voiced support for his wife and her story on Twitter.

NBCUniversal, for its part, has vehemently denied the allegations, in addition to indicating that it consulted a third-party investigator to explore the claims. This (unidentified) individual or organization didn’t find any evidence of discrimination or wrongdoing, per NBC’s statement. NBC officials also conducted extensive meetings with Union shortly after her dismissal.

Julianne Hough and Gabrielle Union departed America’s Got Talent after just one season, with Sofía Vergara and Heidi Klum serving as their replacements alongside comedian Howie Mandel and Simon Cowell, who is also an executive producer.

In a subsequent interview, Hough voiced her approval of Union’s statements without quite corroborating the allegations of discrimination and mistreatment.

Neither Cowell nor Mandell has released an official response to Union’s complaint. America’s Got Talent is airing its 15th season presently, with the next episode slated to broadcast on Tuesday, June 9th.
