Hackers Threaten to Leak Sensitive Documents on Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj, UMG, MTV, Lebron James

Last month, Digital Music News was first to report that hackers had stolen nearly a terabyte worth of sensitive data and client information from servers belonging to prominent music industry law firm Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks. Now, this shadowy band of hackers is threatening to release confidential information about Mariah Carey, Universal Music Group, MTV, and others.

The as-yet unidentified hackers, still negotiating as “REvil,” indicated in a recently published dark-web message that legal documents involving artist Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey, Diddy-founded label Bad Boy Records, and NBA star Lebron James were now at risk of being leaked. The file tranches include NDAs, contracts, and messages with Grubman lawyers.

Additionally, REvil stated in its newest message that the listed parties’ documents will begin three-month-long auctions in July.

The Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey, and Lebron James file-tranche auctions will start at $600,000 apiece, while REvil intends to open the Universal Music Group and MTV listings at $1 million each. The Bad Boy Records auction, for its part, will split the difference with a $750,000 opening price, according to the hackers.

At the time of this writing, none of the individuals and companies impacted by this most recent round of REvil threats had publicly commented on the matter.

Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks’ power-lawyer and owner Allen Grubman – who has long represented some of the most well-known artists and entertainment industry figures in the world – is still refusing to negotiate with the hackers.

The FBI has launched an investigation into the data theft and multimillion-dollar extortion attempt, following leaks (and confirmation from Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks) proving that the personal files had in fact been compromised.

REvil initiated an auction for Madonna’s sensitive documents late last month, shortly after reportedly finding a buyer for a dossier involving Donald Trump.
