In video footage emerging after the incident, Kodak Black is seen chatting with rapper Gunna before getting ambushed by multiple individuals. A scuffle ensues, with gunshots immediately following.
Before heading to the restaurant, Kodak Black was believed to be among the esteemed guests at a Justin Bieber concert at the nearby Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood. Jeff Bezos and his girlfriend, Lauren Sanchez, Hamilton actor Anthony Ramos and former NFL player Tony Gonzalez were also at the gig. Additional guests may have included Drake, Khloe Kardashian, and Bieber’s girlfriend Hailey Baldwin, all of whom were spotted at the afterparty celebration.
Just one day later, Kodak Black confirmed that he would be attending the Super Bowl with Drake.
“Drake Say Box Seats Wit ‘Em @ Da SuperBowl. I Like Da Bengals BTW,” the rapper tweeted on his verified account. Drake and Kodak Black are longtime friends, with Drake a longtime fan of the Florida rapper.
Kodak Black has an extensive criminal history and plenty of beefs. At the tail end of 2020, then-president Donald Trump pardoned Kodak Black on a 46-month prison term, though the South Florida rapper was still left battling other charges.
At this point, it’s also unclear whether Kodak Black was the intended target of the attack. But the rapper was clearly enmeshed in the scuffle and the chaos that unfolded.
Currently, the LAPD has not released any information about the assailants. It’s also unclear if any suspects are in custody. Additionally, it appears that the individuals suffering gunshot wounds were taken to a nearby hospital, are in critical condition, and are expected to survive.
The shooting closely follows a warning from LA native Ice-T, who advised out-of-town rappers to proceed with caution.
“Super Bowl weekend: Not a threat, just a warning,” the OG Original Gangster rapper admonished on Twitter. “Young rappers coming to LA for the Super Bowl weekend. LA has over 50,000 ACTIVE gang members. Make sure you play it SAFE. It’s the Wild Wild West.”
