Country musician Eric Church has canceled a sold-out concert to watch a Final Four game.
Earlier this week, the musician sent ticket-holders a notification that the show was canceled. The show was supposed to be this Saturday (April 2) at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas. But the concert falls on the same day the University of North Carolina goes head to head vs. Duke University.
Ticketmaster sent out notifications to all ticket holders, with Eric Church confirming its the “most selfish” thing he’s ever done. “This Saturday, my family and I are going to stand together to cheer on the Tar Heels as the team has made it to the Final Four,” the statement begins.
“As a lifelong Carolina basketball fan, I’ve watched Carolina and Duke battle over the year but to have them matchup in the Final Four for the first time in the history of the NCAA tournament is any sports enthusiast’s dream,” Church continues. “This is also the most selfish thing I’ve ever asked the Choir to do – to give up your Saturday night plans with us so that I can have this moment with my family and sports community.”
“However, it’s the same type of passion felt by the people who fill the seats at our concerts that makes us want to be part of a crowd at a game of this significance,” says Church. “Woody Durham always said, ‘Go where you go and do what you do.’ Thanks for letting me go here and be with the Tar Heels.”
Many fans of Eric Church are responding negatively to the news. “I’d be upset if I made plans to be there, but I don’t think you can really understand the significance of the game unless you’re from North Carolina,” one fan writes in disappointment about the cancellation. “If Eric Church really believed in the Tar Heels, he would have never scheduled a show during the Final Four to begin with,” writes another.
