The Waze travel app now features direct integration with Apple Music. Here’s how it works.
Waze is a navigation app with community-focused features beyond just Google Maps or Apple Maps. It has over 140 million users since it launched and it often provides more up-to-the-minute traffic conditions compared to other mapping options. The app first launched in 2009 as a free, crowd-sourced navigation app to allow commuters to share info about road hazards.
Google purchased Waze in 2013 for just shy of $1 billion, while expanding the social features of the platform. Those included various music integrations so commuters don’t have to leave their navigation app to change the tunes. Spotify support rolled out in 2017, followed later by Pandora, TuneIn, and Deezer. Apple Music support is one of the last major audio streaming services with Waze support.
How does Waze work?
Waze collects crowd-sourced information from its millions of users to provide real-time information about driving conditions. Waze users can actively report on traffic, accidents, police traps, blocked roads, hazardous weather conditions, and many more options. Waze cross references these reports to help drivers find the best route.
Does Waze work with Android Auto and Apple Carplay?
Yes, the Waze app is compatible with both of those car infotainment systems. To connect to Android Auto, you’ll need to connect your mobile device via USB. Meanwhile, Apple Carplay can be used with a USB cable or wirelessly.
While driving you can use voice commands to navigate the app, find pit stops, or ask about gas prices along the route. Part of how Waze generates money is through hyper local advertisements from local restaurants and gas stations that advertise to drivers using the app.
