Threads has managed to sign up more than 100 million users in just a week—as users flock away from Twitter.
The app is currently available in most countries except Europe, where privacy regulations keep it at bay for now. Threads had 10 million users within the first seven hours of launch and then 30 million by the following morning. By Friday, that number jumped to 70 million and with the weekend included the app has racked up 100 million users. That’s currently less than one-third of the 350 million users believed to be on Twitter.
Twitter users have expressed dismay at how Elon Musk has handled the social media site since his takeover. His style of rapidly making changes with little to no notice has made it hard to promote using the platform. For example, the platform was offline for everyone but Twitter users for July 4 weekend. So how does the new competition stack up to Twitter? Here’s what you need to know as a promoter of music, bands, or any other live promotion you plan to do online.

Threads isn’t the only Twitter rival in town, either. Both Mastodon and Bluesky are presenting themselves as potential places for Twitter refugees who are tired of the platform. Bluesky is currently available as an invite-only service, which means its reach is rather limited. Meanwhile, Mastodon’s federated instances present a learning curve the average person isn’t willing to endure. Threads is currently the most mainstream alternative available for people looking for a Twitter alternative.
Just be aware that if you decide Threads isn’t for you and you want to delete the account—it is tied to your Instagram identity. That may be one reason why it’s been so easy for Zuckerberg to achieve massive signups in a short period—Threads is an extension of Instagram, after all.
