Paul McCartney reveals he plays on one of the new tracks on Jimmy Buffett’s upcoming posthumous album.
A little over a week after his passing on September 1, three new Jimmy Buffett singles — “Bubbles Up,” “Like My Dog,” and “My Gummie Just Kicked In” — were released in preparation for his upcoming album’s posthumous release this November. Paul McCartney’s Instagram tribute post to Buffett reveals that the former Beatle plays on one of the tracks.
“I was very happy to have played on one his latest songs called ‘My Gummy (sic) Just Kicked In,'” writes McCartney. “We had a real fun session, and he played me some of his new songs. One in particular I loved was the song, ‘Bubbles Up.’ And I told him that not only was the song great, but the vocal was probably the best I’ve heard him sing ever.”
The album credits reveal that McCartney plays bass on “My Gummie Just Kicked In.” Buffett got to preview that track during a final interview in July and also previewed “Like My Dog” in his last social media post, a TikTok on August 29. The latter track is a cover of a country song written in 2010 by Harley Allen and Scotty Emerick for Billy Currington.
“Bubbles Up,” which McCartney mentioned as his favorite of the new tracks, is an inspirational song in classic Buffett style, full of nautical imagery and a scuba diving metaphor. “When the journey gets long, just know that you are loved / There is light up above, and the joy is always enough / Bubbles up.”
“He turned a diving phrase that is used to train people underwater into a metaphor for life when you’re confused and don’t know where you are,” continues McCartney in his heartfelt Instagram post. “Just follow the bubbles — they’ll take you up to the surface and straighten you out right away.”
