Following a limited release in theaters and online last October, Tobie Amies’ King Crimson ‘rockumentary,’ ‘In the Court of the Crimson King: King Crimson at 50,’ comes to select theaters in November, with worldwide availability on video-on-demand starting December 1.
Returning to the theater for hit films like Barbie (the soundtrack for which is laden with chart-topping artists) or a music-adjacent experience like Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour concert film, could this be the beginning spark of a boon for music documentary films? This November, another concert documentary experience makes its way to select US theaters with director Tobie Amies’ In the Court of the Crimson King: King Crimson at 50, chronicling the cult classic prog rock band.
“What began as a straightforward documentary about the cult rock band King Crimson as it turned 50, mutated into an exploration of time, death, family, and the transcendent power of music to change lives,” the film’s official synopsis reads. “But with jokes.”
Initially released in a limited run last October, the film took four years to produce. King Crimson frontman Robert Fripp has described the documentary as: “a grown-up film about working players living, dying, laughing, playing…” Like “an episode of ‘The Office’ but with huge drum kits,” even newcomers to the cult favorite King Crimson can enjoy the highly anticipated film in select theaters beginning in November.
